BIA Remodelers Council Serves the Community:  The Bennett Project (2012)

Ready and willing to put their time, talent, and resources to good use, are a team of service oriented remodelers, designers, Aging in Place Specialists, and various local vendors. In March of 2012, a team rallied to remodel this veteran’s Master suite, primarily providing him with an enlarged bathroom and barrier free custom shower, all within 3 weeks time!

Chris Bennett, a 61-year-old veteran found himself out of a job after 7 years working for a computer company. In 2009, he   was diagnosed with Lymphoma leading to a series of chemotherapy, radiation and eventually a bone marrow transplant in which his body rejected, leaving him with a crippling, rare, incurable condition known as Scleroderma. Chris has diabetes and is also visually impaired. Even though Chris has been unable to work, he enjoys writing poetry and studying literature.

Several months prior he applied for a VA HISA grant for financial assistance to modify his shower, but there had been no forward movement on his loan application for almost 2 years. Chris has been married to Sevita Bennett for over 27 years, and she assists with his ongoing needs for care.

The entire bathroom size was only 6’ x 9.5’ with a 3’ x 3’ shower. The shower had a 6” lip which made it difficult and unsafe for Chris to enter. The shower was redesigned and enlarged by narrowing the adjacent master closet. A barrier-free floor and wider doorway now provide easy entry into the shower. Grab bars and adjustable shower hose were installed for Chris’ increased safety. Chris was unable to stand for long at the sink, so knee-room was designed into the new vanity under the sink for Chris to sit on his four-wheeled walker. Comfort height toilet seat and grab bars now make it easier for Chris to sit and stand. Improved lighting and fresh air was provided by replacing a fixed window with a casement style, clear glass window and new multi-light vanity fixture.
