Working with School Districts & Hiring 16 and 17-Year Olds

The BIA is committed to alleviating the workforce shortage in construction. We have connections with school district CTE staff that can help you provide internships for students already enrolled in a CTE program.

Did you know? As an employer in the construction industry, you’re able to hire 16 and 17-year olds when certain conditions are met and the students are enrolled in a CTE program. These students are able to preform some prohibited jobs such as operating power-driven, wood-working machines (including drills, nail guns and pneumatic tools), operating power-driven circular saws, band saws, and guillotine shears, working on roofing operations and excavation operations. Proper training must be provided before these tasks can occur. Let us know you’d like to contact your local school district for more information.

Cascadia Technical Academy is a cooperative Career and Technical learning experience created in partnership with ten school districts in Southwest Washington. It started in 1983 as Clark County Skills Center. This is a construction training opportunity for high school age students. Learn more.

Construction Industry Training Council of Washington

The Construction Industry Training Council of Washington (CITC) is a state-licensed, vocational trade school for the construction industry. The center offers ten state approved construction apprenticeship programs, ten construction training programs, many state approved continuing education courses for license renewal; as well as skills assessments, performance verifications, and targeted task training and skills upgrade courses for field construction professionals.
